Our Emotions and Our Qi

Excitement -- How Much Is Too Much?

Emotions play a big role in our health.  Understanding how our various emotions affect the Qi in our body, and therefore affect our health, is very important. Ancient Chinese culture has a thorough explanation in this area, which has been part of the foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine.  In this issue, I want to discuss Excitement and how it is related to our Qi.

What happens to our Qi when we get excited?
Excitement slows down the Qi flow in our body. Extreme excitement makes our Qi flow too slow, even stopping at times, which hurts our heart Qi. There are real accounts of people dying from being extremely excited.

When excitement becomes a preferred “flavor” in our daily lives, being aware of not going to extremes becomes very important. So how much is too much? There is no clear line to define what is too much, but when you find yourself losing sleep, losing your focus and even losing your appetite due to being overly excited about something, then it is time to learn to calm down by linking your excitement to your inner peace :)

How to calm down:

1. First, be aware of your excited feelings. Being in close touch with our emotions is the foundation of our self-care practice.

2. In any comfortable posture (sitting, standing or lying down), stretch your legs and your arms as far as you can.  Focus your mind on the arm or leg you are stretching. Stretch each limb at least five times.

3. Sit on any flat surface, be comfortable and be sure that your spine is loose and straight. Close your eyes and start to feel your body inside.

4. Take a deep breathe and relax more.

5. Continue with deep breathing, with your mind participating. When inhaling, imagine there is a lot of energy rising from your tailbone up the back of your body to the top of your head.  When exhaling, imagine the energy at the top of your head going all the way down the front of your body and circling around to your tailbone.

6. Repeat Step 5, for at least nine breathing cycles.

7. Sit still for a minimum of 2 minutes. Afterwards feel the full energy inside of your body, instead  the physical parts.

This whole process takes 5 to 10 minutes.

GROWTH
Change With Guidance

As important as change is, guiding change makes an even bigger difference in the quality of our lives. Without guidance our changes can be very chaotic.

Suppose your spouse suggests you both are watching too much television.  She has decided to join a book discussion group which meets two nights a week. "Would you like to come along?" she asks.  When you decline, she asks you to find something to do to break the dull routine you both have gotten into at home.

You agree to find something else to do two nights a week besides staying home and watching television. You have consciously agreed to change.  What do you do? Go bowling? Take evening classes?  Go to a bar?  Get a girlfriend?  Join a men's support group? You have many choices. Which activities you choose will determine the quality of guidance you give yourself in making this change.

Thoughtfully guiding yourself through changes will help you Be Happy!

Manage Your Career

A management consultant was experiencing lower back pain. His regular doctor was booked up, so he went to a local public health clinic. To his surprise, the  family doctor who worked there listened to him, correctly diagnosing his problem and prescribed effective treatments. When he came back to see her for follow up,  he told her how much he appreciated her approach. However, he noted that she only worked four days a week between 9 am and noon. Click to continue...
