Do You Like To Laugh? Manage Your Career
Continued:
“You did such a great job taking care of my back pain!” he exclaimed, “yet you only work 16 hours per week. What do you do with yourself the rest of the day?”
“Well, my life is pretty good,” she replied, ”When I leave here, I pick up my son from kindergarten, play with him all afternoon, do some gardening, and cook dinner with my husband.”
“You have such great medical talent. What’s more, I noticed that you get along well with the clinic staff and the nurses respect you. You are wasting your time working in a public clinic like this. I could help you become a big medical success. A little extra work on your part could go a long way. First, I will set you up in an upscale office downtown. You will need a bigger staff and a junior partner. You will need to join several key managed care plans. We need set up three or four satellite offices and edge out some of the competition. Once you have taken in a few more physicians, and your practice is booming, we can apply for some exclusive contracts with the HMOs.”
“How long will all of this take?”, asked the family doctor.
“About 20 years,” replied the management consultant.
“What would I do then?” she asked.
“At that point you would be in a good position to sell the practice to your junior partner and take it easy”, he replied with a smile.
“And what would I do then,” she asked.
“Ah, then you get your reward for your years of hard work: You can spend time with your grandchildren, do some gardening, cook dinner with your husband, and maybe put in a few hours at a public health clinic.”
